I was a young man back in the 90’s seeking knowledge about computer technology, didn’t know much about IBM’s (better known as PC’s today) I saw an Amiga magazine on a news rack, I was fascinated by the cover and the content. Who would have thought I would began a long journey with no end in sight.

I know the IBM’s had great business ties but the graphics and colors just weren’t there. The Amiga had powerful stereo sound and graphics, some might say “way ahead of their time in 1990”. Like most I was broke, working a low income job and that Amiga was going to cost me $500. (IBM cost about $2000 then)

I checked the Amiga magazines to locate local dealers, amazingly enough there was one not far from my apartment. I went there saw my first amazing demo of the current Amiga models. Afterwards, I wanted one so bad but really could not afford it.

The salesman tried to sale me an Amiga 500, “I just don’t have the money, and credit is out of the question” I replied. Then he said some that caught my attention “We do have a Lay-a-way Plan”, remember those, they are a thing of the past now in 2008.

I put in a down payment, paid it off and owned my first real computer. I was so excited I want to share this with everyone. At that time there was an Amiga Users group called A.C.E., but most quit going to meetings over time. So I decided to start my own and called it Amiga Response Crew, later renamed A.R.C.U.G..

Word spread quickly and I reached a full crew membership of 22, I must say “Those were the days!”, our group changed over years members left, new members joined and to this day we are still actively  meeting every month, and though 17 years have passed we are still dedicated to serving the Amiga community. 1998 we did our 1st computer show The Amiga Extravaganza 98 this was truly a success story for the group. Now through the growth of the internet and email we can now reach Amiga friends over seas and around the world.  Sincerely, JR
